Tips for clean scans

Hold the camera directly above the book to avoid keystone distortion.
Light the page evenly from the front or slightly above to avoid shadows. Daylight near a window works well.
Leave a little margin around the page in the frame — it makes correction easier afterwards.
Steady both the book and the phone before you release the shutter to avoid blur.

Keep the book intact, or cut out the pages?

If you want to keep the book intact, photograph it page by page while it is open. The app's cropping and skew correction can compensate for a certain amount of gutter shadow and page curvature. If you need the highest possible accuracy, you can take the book apart and photograph each page flat — but it takes far more effort and the book cannot be put back together.

Make it searchable with OCR

Turn on OCR when exporting and HonScan produces a PDF that still looks like the photographed page, with searchable, selectable, copyable text embedded underneath. Open the finished PDF in a viewer and try Ctrl+F (or the "Find" feature on a phone) to search for a word, or press and hold to select and copy a sentence — if that works, the OCR layer is doing its job.
